ABC Tarpaulins are made from 100% virgin Polyethylene (PE) that is made from woven PE to form a sheet that has an Ultraviolet Light and Waterproof scrim on both the upper and lower sides. This creates a product that is waterproof, robust, and resistant to stretching due to its manufacturing characteristics. ABC Tarps are available in a variety of grades, including our Duratarp 4000 Heavy Duty and our Duratarp 5000 product ranges.

Like all tarpaulins, it is critical that people take certain measures to ensure longevity and that the structural integrity of the tarpaulin is maintained. When purchasing a tarp talk to the provider about the basic do’s and don’t’ s of owning a tarpaulin.

Here are some key pointers that will ensure you are getting a product that is fit for purpose and will last.

  • Make sure that you provide details of where the tarpaulin is going to be used, what the tarpaulin is going to cover, the desired period for the tarpaulin to last and how is the tarpaulin going to be secured.
  • Make sure that when you are installing the tarpaulin do this on a day when the conditions are fine, in addition when unfurling the tarpaulin always do this downwind, if you unfurl upwind there is a high likelihood that the tarp will balloon up like a sale and end up in your neighbor’s property (more likely damaged)
  • Make sure that once the tarpaulin is in place make sure that it is secured well – eyelets on the ABC Tarps are supplied on the metered interval. The eyelets are there to be used they are not there for good looks – use them. In the circumstance of where you are using a Builders Floor Sheet or a Stockpile Cover ensure that these are secured correctly either with weights or backfilling.
  • It is critical when installing a tarpaulin to ensure that it is secured tightly, in addition, please make sure that any sharp edges are buffered or protected from the tarpaulin and that movement/rubbing is as little as possible. Movement and/or sharp edges will result in the product being compromised and ultimately lead to damage, this does not matter if the tarpaulin is made from PE, PVC, or Canvas.

How to care for tarps when they are not being used?
Below are some simple tips that will ensure you get the best out of your tarpaulin.

  • Remove the tarpaulin and ideally clean down both sides with soap and water
  • Attend to any damage early and repair the tarp where possible – if possible cordon off the area where the tarpaulin is being used in particular as a Cricket Cover or sports cover to minimize foot traffic (in particular with people wearing shoes with sports spikes).
  • Ensure that the tarpaulin is dry – never store a tarpaulin that is dirty or damp
  • Ensure that the tarpaulin is neatly folded – use multiple people if you have a large tarp, a helpful tip – when folding the tarpaulin, if possible, do this as a concertina fold this will enable you to easily unfurl the tarp the next time it is required.
  • Ensure that the tarp is stored away correctly, if possible, do this on an elevated shelf – do not leave it on the floor or dirt floor where rodents and other pests may take refuge.
